Commercial Cleaning Franchise – The PROs and CONs
If you're looking to start a new business in the commercial cleaning niche, then you probably already know that your two main options are to either start your own business from the ground up, or to purchase a commercial cleaning franchise.
What you may not yet be clear on, is what are the benefits of going for the franchise options, and what are the areas you must watch out for.
As someone who own my own successful cleaning business, I have researched the topic very carefully, and I wanted to give you a short — easy to understand list of the most important PROs and CONs. Hopefully this list will help you make the right choice for you.
PROs
- It's a Proven Business Model
Yes — the nature of a franchise is that it is a proven business model — you know it works and it will make you money. All the stuff is already figure out for you. You just have to pay for it and get on with the work.
The other advantage to office cleaning franchises is that you normally have a recognized brand behind you — it's always useful if the brand has good reputation — you almost have to just let the brand do the talking. - Your Marketing Materials and Strategy is Defined
As a franchise owner you will usually receive a full marketing plan and strategy. The materials are usually already tried and tested, and all you have to do to get started is to set the wheels in motion.
If you were to start your own business from scratch, you will need to understand how to market effectively, or to hire someone to do that for you — or you may get your marketing VERY WRONG. - You Have Systems & Processes to Follow
This one is invaluable in my opinion. Systems and processes are very important to a successful business. If you're to have any hope of delivering a high standard, consistently good commercial cleaning service you will need to make sure you have those in place.
But most businesses either don't have the time to define and record their processes, or they don't have the skills to do that. Worse case scenario — some business owners don't even know they should have them.
When you buy a commercial cleaning franchise, you will have that taken care of — as opposed to having to try and get things right yourself.
CONs
- You Might Find There's Not Enough Room to Be the Boss
Yes — most franchises will have regulations and rules as to how much you can divert from the blueprint. If you are someone who is naturlly enterpreneurial and you're not fond of your ideas being confined — then you will find this to be a CON.
Of course each franchise varies in their T & Cs so I strongly advise that you review them first, before completely scrapping the idea of buying a franchise. - Be Aware of Royalty Fees
These are there for every franchise — that's how the franchiser makes his money in the long run. You just need to be aware of the fee structure. Some commercial cleaning franchises will take a pre-set fee each month. Others will bind you to a revenue-share style fees – where you pay between 4 and 7% of your total earnings.
Make sure to decide on the right type of payment for you, as later on when your business grows you might find the payments are too much for comfort. - Make Sure The Support Promised is the Support Delivered
And finally — we have to raise the issue of support. As a franchise start-up, part of the main benefits is the support offered to you by the franchiser.
This usually comes in the shape of a support team sourced and maintained by the franchiser – a team of business, finance, marketing and design professionals who are well familiar with the commercial cleaning market. This is an invaluable asset to you — so use them as much as you can especially in the opening stages.
But my reason for mentioning this point under the negatives, is more to warn you to beware that you need to not be shy about requesting what is owed to you. Just because the franchiser doesn't call you every twenty minutes to ask if you need his team's support, it doesn't mean you shouldn't approach them with any questions you might have about running the franchise. Beware – very often people will promise you the 'world' and then go on to deliver nothing…
But with all of the above into consideration — you are the only one that can decide which business is right for you. It really depends on how you like to work, and under what circumstances you thrive as a business person.
Some people work better with strict rules and guidelines, others like the flexibility of being their own boss. Some like to be certain of the outcome, others like to make their own path and find that problems are a part of the challenge of owning your own financial freedom.
When it comes to running a commercial cleaning business — there are no right or wrong answers.
