Top Tips for Writing an Effective Cleaning Business Marketing Plan

An effective business marketing plan is one of the pivotal parts of a successful cleaning business. Many new business owners however, still think that marketing is a secondary component and they leave the marketing plan to the back of the queue.

It is incredible to me to even think of a successful business without a Marketing Plan…

But if you are one of the budding entrepreneurs who understands the importance of an effective marketing strategy to the success of your new business, then here are my top tips on how to make sure your plan does more than just taking bureaucratic time off your hands — it actually supports your business objectives.

Your Business Marketing Plan Must Have the Following Sections

  • Business Mission & Marketing Plan Purpose
  • Status Quo
  • Marketing Objectives & Strategy
  • Marketing Tactics
  • Budgets and Implementation
  • Additional Considerations

Learn to Write SMART

Your marketing plan incorporates a wealth of information – everything from strategies through to goals and the tactics assigned to get you to these goals. But if you don't write all of these components in a specific and measurable way you are likely to never know exactly what you've achieved.

This will dampen your enthusiasm and worse yet — it may even discourage you from even trying…

To make sure you don't write impotent marketing plans use this simple acronym — SMART:

S – specific
M – measurable
A – actionable
R – realistic
T – timely

Get Input

Don't be tempted to sit down by yourself and write this 'thing' from start to finish. To get the most objective overview and critical eye on the details, you should work on this with someone else. Ideally you want this 'someone else' to have marketing knowledge, but even a savvy friend will help you get a different perspective on things.

This is particularly important when it comes to defining your target market and positioning. Sometimes we all get bogged down by our own perception of a market, that we don't see the obvious. Having another set of eyes in the process allows you to get a better perspective.

Get To Know Your Competition

Yes — know what and how they do what they do. Understand the marketing campaigns and strategies they are using. And if there is a particularly successful cleaning business in your area that you can emulate — then don't be shy to do it.

Of course I am not advocating copying them, but spend some time researching how they operate and then learn from them. They are successful for a reason, and since you want to be as successful (or more) it makes sense that instead of reinventing the 'wheel' in the beginning days you follow their example.

Then once you've achieved similar level of success and are now stable in your own right, then start innovating… which brings me to my next point…

Get Creative

I'm a great advocate of learning from other successful people. Pretty much everything in this world has already been done — in terms of conservative business and marketing notions. But that doesn't mean that you should follow like a sheep.

Actually just getting by and copying what others do can keep you going for a long time quite contently. But — if you are not happy with being content, you must learn to think for yourself.

I mean that each time you read a book, or go on a course, or see an awesome marketing campaign that you want to include in your business marketing plan, you should fit it in your own context. Don't just blindly copy strategies and tactics — because things are not the same from one business to the other. Make things your own and be creative – have fun – push the boundaries.

And Finally…

At the end of the day, the reason you are likely getting into starting your own commercial cleaning business is because you want to be in charge of your own finances and your career. You want more time for yourself, and you probably crave more fulfillment from the work you do every day.

So although hard work will definitely be required – try and have as much fun doing it as possible. If you don't — you are less likely to stick with it as you will sooner or later run out of will power — passion is a much stronger emotion than willpower…
